Food waste is a serious global, environmental problem. In this paper, we investigate the role of supermarket promotions on household food waste in a natural field experiment. Together with eight major supermarkets, we test how the framing of store discounts affects purchasing behavior and consumption of groceries. Keeping prices fixed, we randomly assign simple discounts, an information nudge, and a salient comparison price to the stores and compare purchasing patterns compared to a multi-buy baseline. We measure household food waste through a randomized survey. Our purchase data results show that consumers are influenced by the presentation of in-store discounts. They buy ca. 18% more fresh produce in the multi-buy baseline compared to a simple discount. Our survey evidence shows that households are 10% more likely to consume products bought in the single discount condition than if products were purchased in a multi-buy condition. The study has direct implications for policy.
