A rapid and global transition is needed to prevent catastrophic climate change. At the individual level, this transition necessitates profound behavioral changes in Western countries, encompassing most aspects of a typical Western way of living. The challenges of making behavioral changes are, however, prevalent and well-known and the success rate is often only modest, even for strongly motivated people. Despite this dire outlook, the current situation poses a unique opportunity for behavioral scientists to make their research relevant for and available to policymakers and practitioners. In this seminar, I will focus on self-regulation, which plays a pivotal function in complex behaviour change, and highlight areas where self-regulation research can inform strategies for climate change mitigation as well as propose avenues for future research in this area.
