Previous research suggests that the decision on whether to report a peer’s misconduct depends on the relationship between the whistleblower and wrongdoer. Yet, to date, this behavior is discussed in terms of interpersonal relations. Being a member of an organization implies multiple group memberships, which are pivotal for the development of intergroup relations within the organization. Drawing on social identity theory and self-categorization theory, the present research aims to understand whether and to what extent work-related group memberships affect reporting behavior. The results demonstrate that close relationships influence reporting intentions. Results also suggest that the way people socially categorize others and themselves may affect their intentions to engage in peer reporting.
