Communication increases collaborative corruption

Does interpersonal verbal communication deter or facilitate collaborative dishonest behaviors? In two experimental studies, recently published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, CIBP researchers Mathilde Tønnesen, Christian Elbæk, Stefan Pfattheicher and Panos Mitkidis, found that communication increases collaborative dishonesty compared to non-communicative context, even when participants engaged only in casual, non-task related conversation. These studies represent the first direct evidence that, while essential for facilitating everyday partnerships, coordinating goals and actions, communication can also inadvertently promote unethical actions.
