One of the key steps to achieve sustainable development consists of tackling corruption around the world -- as highlighted by the UN development goal 16. Informing anti-corruption, Large comparative lab and field experiments, as well as meta-analyses have provided insights into how people around the world deal with the temptation to break ethical rules for financial profit. The findings suggest that large and relatively stable cross-societal variation in dishonesty stem from a legacy of weak institutions. Here, we present the first behavioral insights into inter-cultural corruption. We ran a large incentivized online experiment using a bribery game with representative samples from 21 countries. All participants were matched with a participant from each of the other countries, allowing us to gain first comprehensive behavioral insights into intercultural variations into dyadic forms of unethical behavior. The results reveal stark intra-individual variation, suggestive of what we label "conditional corruption" -- people offering bribes to partners from countries they believe to be corrupt.
