Scholarships

We strongly encourage PhD students and scholars from developing countries to participate in the conference. A competitive scholarships program is available for these delegates.

There are:

  • three ISSDP doctoral scholarships @ 700 euro
  • three ISSDP developing country scholarships @ 700 euro
  • and up to 12 Asian scholarships @ 2,000 USD

The conference committee will be responsible for choosing the scholars.

Further details and the specific criteria for each of these scholarships can be found below.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ASIAN SCHOLARS

Details of the scholarships are given below.

Subject to funding, a scholarship will be offered to a maximum of 12 Asian scholars. It will be awarded on the basis of a competition between applicants. Up to 12 abstracts that are submitted by Asian scholars on the topic of drug policy reform who apply for the scholarship will be selected by the conference organizing committee.

Successful applicants will receive a bursary of up to $2,000 to pay for the conference fee, travel and subsistence expenses associated with the conference.

The bursaries will be paid by ISSDP to scholars to reimburse them for the costs of travel and hotels (as directly related to the conference) of each scholar. If their costs are lower than this, the monies will be transferred to pay costs of other scholars.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible, applicants for scholarship will have to be:

  • Either: A scholar/researcher residing in Asia and carrying out research on Asia or an Asian country, or: A doctoral student of Asian nationality who is carrying out research on Asia or an Asian country (doctoral student applicants may be residing outside Asia).
  • Carrying out research on some aspect of drug policy reform
  • Willing and able to present a paper at the conference in English.

Selection

The conference committee will be responsible for choosing the scholars. They will decide: a) Which abstracts submitted by Asian scholars are suitable for presentation at the conference, and: b) If there are more than 12 suitable abstracts, which 12 are of the highest quality (originality, methodology, relevance to existing theoretical problems).

Scholarships will be awarded to up to 12 applicants who submit the highest quality abstracts. The conference committee may decide there are fewer than 12 suitable abstracts, in which case fewer than 12 scholarships will be offered.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS

A scholarship will be offered to a maximum of three postgraduate doctoral students. It will be awarded on the basis of a competition between applicants. The three best abstracts that are submitted by doctoral students who apply for the scholarship will be selected by the conference organizing committee.

Successful applicants will receive:

  • A bursary of up to €700 to pay for travel and subsistence expenses associated with the conference.
  • Free registration to the conference, including meals and refreshments that are included in the conference package for all participants.

The bursaries will be paid by ISSDP to scholars to reimburse them for the costs of travel and hotels (as directly related to the conference) of each scholar. If their costs are lower than this, the monies will be either transferred to pay costs of other scholars, or contributed to the general conference budget.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible, applicants for scholarship will have to be:

  • Engaged as postgraduate doctoral students (full or part-time) at a University (no geographic restriction).
  • Carrying out research on some aspect of drug policy.
  • Not a previous winner of a scholarship to an ISSDP conference.
  • Willing and able to present a paper at the conference in English.

Selection

The conference committee will be responsible for choosing the scholars. They will decide: a) Which abstracts submitted by postgraduate students are suitable for presentation at the conference, and b) If there are more than three suitable abstracts, which three are of the highest quality (originality, methodology, relevance to existing theoretical problems).

Scholarships will be awarded to the three applicants who submit the highest quality abstracts. The conference committee may decide there are fewer than three suitable abstracts, in which case fewer than three scholarships will be offered.

Scholars will be invited (but not required) to submit their papers for consideration for publication in any journal special issue that is to follow the conference.
