Anthropological psychology is a special discipline within general and theoretical psychology, which aims to identify, describe and explain in which ways the human psyche is particularly human.

This approach is based on three historical perspectives on the basic phenomena:

  • A natural-historical perspective (phylogenetic and evolutionary development of the human psyche).
  • A cultural-historical perspective (similarities and differences between the basic phenomena in contemporary societies and cultures).
  • An individual-historical perspective (basic phenomena in life-historical times; retrospective with regard to the life-historical dynamic forces in connection with development, pointing forward with regard to the ongoing potentials for development).
