Profile

I am Professor of Medical Physics working in the field of radiotherapy of cancer diseases. I am particularly interested in the use of Artificial Intelligence for planning and personalization of radiotherapy, based on medical imaging.

Research

My research group is multidisciplinary spanning computer science, medical physics, statistics, biomedical engineering and medical science.  Our research ranges from bleeding edge innovation and development of AI models to implementation, and we have initiated and lead several clinical trials testing the use of AI-assisted radiotherapy. Overall, our aim is to decrease  uncertainty in treatment and enhance personalization through computational methods empowered by artificial intelligence.

Collaborations

I am director of the research center AIM@CANCER developing artificial intelligence using large medical imaging datasets for individualized radiotherapy. The center includes experts from Copenhagen University, Rigshospitalet, Odense University Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

I serve as deputy director of the Danish National Research Center for Radiotherapy (DCCC-RT), and am part of several EU consortia.

I collaborate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on use of Artificial Intelligence for automated radiotherapy in low- and middle-income countries.

Job responsibilities

I lead the research group “Artificial Intelligence and Big Data in Radiation Oncology”, including hosting of a local GPU cluster for computational research. We develop AI models for medical image analysis, and we spearhead trials to investigate the effects of implementing AI in clinical practice.

I am a core collaborator in the Danish Data Science Infrastructure for Radiotherapy (DESIRE), funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

I furthermore serve as chairperson of the PhD committee at AU Health.
