Postdoc of psychology Christopher Kehlet Ebbrecht has received DKK 2,242,500 from the Independent Research Fund Denmark for an international postdoctoral position.

The postdoctoral grant will send Christopher Kehlet Ebbrecht to the Psychology Research Institute (PsyRes) at the University of Amsterdam for 18 months, but first he will spend 6 months at the Department of Political Science at Aarhus University with Lasse Lindekilde and Jesper Wiborg Schneider as collaborators.

Christopher Kehlet Ebbrecht's project is called “Rethinking Quantitative Radicalization Research: Solving the Specificity Problem through Bayesian Statistics and Case-Control Studies”.

Christopher Kehlet Ebbrecht will examine radicalisation as a complex process in which individuals gradually begin to support or commit violent extremism, such as terrorism and political violence. Although previous research has identified many risk factors, the field faces a specificity problem: The same factors only explain radicalisation in some individuals, but not in others. This challenges the understanding of how radicalisation actually occurs, and is due, among other things, to methodological limitations in existing studies.

Christopher Kehlet Ebbrecht will test whether Bayesian statistics can create more precise analyses than traditional methods. He will also conduct comparative control studies that compare radicalisation factors in violent extremists and in the general population. Overall, the project will contribute with new analytical approaches that can strengthen both research and preventive efforts against violent extremism.

DFF-International Postdoctoral Grant aims to strengthen the international mobility of younger talented researchers, and to develop the competencies of researchers in the beginning of their research career. The intention is to enable the grant recipient to consolidate their individual research profile by independently managing a concrete research project at a research institution abroad.
