Prevention of problem drug use among youth in the Prison Service

Prevention of problem drug use among youth in the Prison Service

Study of prevention strategies for problem drug use among youth in contact with the Prison Service in six EU countries.

Aims

Six European countries are involved in this project, referred to as the EPPIC project. The purpose of the project is to gather, exchange and transfer knowledge on best practice interventions to prevent illegal use of substances including new psychoactive substances among young people between the ages of 15 to 24, who come into contact with the Prison Service. Another purpose of the project is to develop a set of guidelines for the prevention/interventions among youth, based on the existing European Drug Prevention Quality Standards. Finally, as part of the project we aim to establish a knowledge network for practitioners and others, working with young people who are involved in criminal activities and are experiencing problem drug use.

Background

Until now, research has primarily focused on either youth and crime or youth and problematic use of illegal substances.  This project  avoids such a division and instead aims to study the interactions between substance use, crime and young people. A significant part of the EPPIC-project therefore focuses on gathering knowledge about young people’s experiences with and understandings of their substance use and criminal trajectories and the connections between these, as well as their experiences of participating in interventions and prevention strategies.

The study

EPPIC is a three-year EU project, in which researchers from Denmark, Austria, Germany, Italy, Poland and the UK collaborate. The study will 1) gather and analyse already existing knowledge on prevention strategies and interventions to prevent problem drug use among youth in contact with the Prison Service; and 2) produce knew knowledge through qualitative interviews with 40 young people in each partner country as well as with professionals working in interventions targeting these young people.

The project concludes December 2019.
