The city of Aarhus

Aarhus University’s main campus is located in Aarhus on the Jutland peninsula. The city has a total population of 319,094, and is situated by the sea with easy access to nearby woods and wetlands. In addition, Aarhus offers a rich history and a wide variety of cultural events. Aarhus is the center of a region of 1.5 million people within a one hour commuting distance.

Experience Aarhus
Aarhus is known as an innovative city with numerous cultural activities, restaurants and shopping possibilities. The city has been selected shopping city number one in Scandinavia and is also known in Denmark as "the city of smiles".

Furthermore, the city offers several different recreational areas such as parks, beaches and forests, as well as a popular Latin Quarter, several shopping streets and centers, a great variety of cafés and restaurants. Finally, the city offers various cultural attractions such as the ARoS Art Museum, the Old Town Open Air Museum, the great Cathedral and the queen's palace and many other things.

Aarhus was appointed the European Capital of Culture (ECoC) in 2017 by the EU.

Developing Aarhus
Because of its large student population, Aarhus is the youngest city in Denmark in terms of average age. The international population of students and staff at the university and the international business community in Aarhus create a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere in the city.

The city of Aarhus is undergoing rapid development. In the years ahead, the city will be one of the busiest construction sites in Denmark. Among other things, the city will be integrated with the old harbour area, where the innovative and famous building "the Iceberg" is situated. This new part of Aarhus is definitely worth a visit.

Getting around in Aarhus
Generally, the city is rather small and well organised, and most things are within walking distance. A walk from downtown to the main university campus takes approximately 20 minutes.

City busses in Aarhus
The main public transportation in Aarhus is the city busses. Most busses drive through the city centre and many busses stop at Nørrebrogade or Randersvej next to the university campus. You purchase your bus ticket at the ticket machine inside the bus. The price is DKK 20 (2 zones). 

All taxis in Aarhus are metered and accept major credit cards. Tax and tips are included in the meter price. Taxis can be hailed on the street or ordered by phone (no extra charge).

You can usually always find and hail a taxi at the railway station.
